Veterans Rule The Day

Veterans ruled the day at Driffield Striders annual Mucky Duck race on Sunday. Race winner John Mason (44) of Woodkirk Striders and runner-up Ian Grewar (49) of East Hull Harriers were two of six vets in the first 10. Mason clocked 49.21 in leading from first to last, with Grewar, who has been running over 30 years, recording 50.45. A new women's best time went to Spenborough's Karen Pickles (54.40) - a newcomer to the event.

The race, hosted by Driffield Rugby Club, saw 219 runners tackle the multi-terrain 8.5 mile course in dry, sunny but windy conditions. Driffield Striders' senior runners were prominent throughout, with Jon Morgan (53.18) tenth and Neil Ridsdale (54.16) thirteenth and first over 50.  Steve Dale beat the hour by a second followed by Roger Teare (61.46), Sian Morgan (63.32), Paul Wilson (64.04), Helen Thompson (65.05), Terry McGuinness, Vanessa Frith (71.07), Rachael Byas (71.36), Stuart Barker (71.54), Simon Cook (76.55). The Wolds Way to Health gym in Driffield entered a strong team. They were led in by Richard Kerry (60.20), Andrew Soanes (61.43), Patrick Burdass (62.34), Matthew Cole (63.01),Martin Davies (64.05), Edwin Maund (66.54), James Iveson (67.07), Richard Cousins (67.47), Will Brennand (67.53), Andrew Lawty (68.27), Richard Iveson (68.44), Charlotte Lovewell (75.11), Sheila Howes (80.41), Rebecca Gilbank (82.34), Michael Hadfield (82.56), Rupert Clemmit (85.14), Rachel Gilbank (85.22), John Boyes (86.19) and Annmarie Terry (87.10).

The mens team prize was won by Goole Viking Striders, and the Ladies team prize was won by Beverley AC.  It was rumoured that one local clubs attempt to win the mens team prize was scuppered by one of their runners not bringing their trainers with them!

Earlier, a one mile Fun Run, drew a record 80 strong field of children and parents.
